Now we have all been guilty of covering even if we don’t realize it. Yoshino himself writes, “Everyone covers. To cover is to tone down a disfavored identity to fit into the mainstream” (Yoshino 539). We are all just trying to blend into one person so everywhere you look all you see if the same people looking and acting the same.
When it came to using quotes I have never been good at putting them into my paper. With this selection I was using Yoshino as a source to define the term covering for my paper. I used a paraphrased version in my introduction paragraph and then used his direct quote in paragraph 3 of my final for paper 1. Having my explain the idea of covering in my first two paragraphs I didn’t really cushion this quote with too much information before using the quote but i described after why I was using it and why it’s important.
Eventually, those kids will conform and do anything they can just to be accepted, just to stop feeling like something is wrong with them. Yoshino in his Ted Talk Diversity Does Not Mean Having to Choose Between Identity and Inclusion mentions that, “idea is that if you modulate your outsider identity to adopt mainstream behaviors and you’ll be included and so it puts people to this tragic choice between their identity and inclusion” ( Yoshino 00:32). It’s a choice that people have to make whether they want to keep their identity and be themselves or hide that just to fit in with others.
With this quote I feel I did a better job at introducing it and cushioning it with information surrounding the quote. I brought in my idea of conforming and being accepted then using Yoshino’s Ted Talk to also highlight the fact that kids adopt behaviors to fit in. Then after the quote I used more information to tie it all together and make the flow between the sentences work. This I felt was an improvement from the quote above because I gave more background before introducing the quote.
This is something I am still working on to improve. During this process though I have gotten better about making sure quotes are introduced properly and make sense with my points that i’m trying to get across in my paper. Also I have learned how to properly do in-text citations with my quotes.
