Appiah;  “When we offer, judgments , after all, its rarely because we have applied well-thought-out principles to a set of facts and deduced an answer. Out efforts to justify what we have done — or what we plan to do – are typically made up after the event, rationalizations of what we have decided intuitively.”

Camryn; I really liked these sentences because to me it seems true. We offer judgments but never really think about the judgments we are making. We just think them or say them and most of the time they are bad but we never think about the facts and then come up with an answer we just immediately think of an answer without looking at all the facts. The second part of this quote i liked because we we never think about our actions until after. We do everything without thinking then after when we realize there are consequences we make up reason to justify what we did. By then though it is too late.

Appiah; “You will believe that it is a good way to teach them right from wrong and that, despite the temporary suffering caused by beating, they will end up better off for it”.

Camryn; Why do people think that causing harm to children is that right thing to do? Isn’t just putting them in time out or just showing them without harm what is the right and wrong thing to do. What if you do spank them then they grow up to think that violence is okay because they were taught young that it is okay to hurt others because you are teaching them a lesson. I just think there are better ways to be able to discipline a child than to purposely cause them pain.

Appiah; “If they had time on their hands, they could engage in charitable work or entertain one another; a few of them might engage in the arts, writing novels, painting, performing in music, theater, and dance. But there was little place for them in the “learned professions” – as lawyers or doctors, priests or rabbis; and if they were to be academics, they would teach young women and probably remain unmarried”.

Camryn; This frustrates me, just because they are women even in olden times should not mean that they should be treated any less than men. Also just because they are into academics and want to teach younger women means they are less likely to be married. Someone should be happy if they are educated because then then will be smart and can help out in making decisions. But no that wasn’t the way because women wouldn’t have a say in anything.

Appiah; “Above all, we have deep habits about gender. A man and women go out on a date. Out habit is that, even if the woman offers, the man pays. A man and a women approach an elevator door. The man steps back. A man and women kiss in a movie theater. No one takes a second look. Two men walk hand in hand in the high street. People are embarrassed. They hope their children don’t see. They don’t know how to explain it to them.”

Camryn; This is the greatest problem in our world today. We have these views that have been established well before our time and somehow no one can see that things are changing. The world is changing around them. No people just think that the ways things use to be is the way things always have to be. Yes the woman can pay for dinner and no that doesn’t mean the man is any less a man. Maybe they just want to be equal and share the rights it’s a compromise that is acceptable to do. It shouldn’t matter who pays for what or who is holding hands in the street. People are people and if they want to do something that is not the normal habit well then maybe that habit needs to change and become something more suitable for the changing world.
