Read “Bad Feminist” by Roxane Gay 168-175. Annotate and write a blog post interrogating how Gay is responding to the tension between autonomy and belonging. Is she still a feminist? Is she a bad feminist (169)?
The idea of feminism has blown up over the ideas with the thought that women should be treated better. Roxane Gay talks about this idea and how she is trying to be a feminist but as she puts it “falls short” She says she is a bad feminist because she doesn’t fall into the normal categories. She likes shaving her legs, and not taking the trash out. Feminist today think they can do everything by themselves without help and having hair is okay. But Guy doesn’t exactly thinks that and so she calls herself a bad feminist. At one point she says that the idea of feminism does not allow for individuality by saying “essential feminism is how it doesn’t allow for the complexities of human experiences or individuality” (Gay 170). I really like this point because it how I feel to when I think about feminism. I am all about women wanting a better life but to make people feel trapped by the idea or if someone doesnt fit the mold to say they aren’t a feminist should not be a thing. People can have different opinions life Gay does and that shouldn’t make them any less of something than someone else who may “fit” the mold a little better. I personally don’t think Gay is a bad feminist just because she doesn’t like the exact same things as other people who say they are a feminist.
