Become an expert on your section of Appiah’s “The Primacy of Practice” and post to share with others in your group.  For your section, your job is to understand and explain by looking up unfamiliar words, names, places etc. to be sure you’re clear about the terminology and references Appiah is using.  Your post should include a short summary focusing on what Appiah says in your section about what works and what doesn’t in attempts to make conversation and a link to a resource to explain a reference that Appiah makes.  Here are examples from a past semester.

I had the section of Winners and Loser, in this section it talked a lot about those are winning from the world changing and those who are loosing from it and don’t benefit from the changes being made. In today’s world new laws and new ideas are constantly being added or changed. Appiah mentions things like abortion and gay marriage were people’s views had to change and laws are being made to allow to new normal of marriage into today’s world. They are now being accepted and are seen as members of the community. Of course for those people they are winning, but everytime someone wins other loose. The people to really lose in this situation are the people who don’t see the change that is happening and still think that the only right thing is like is a man and women getting married or that women should not have a choice in what they do with their bodies. Appiah also talks about how now there are treaties and rules that help women gain a more equal rights in the world like voting, being able to hold power or more rights in a workplace which a win. He also talks about the loss that there is a change in balance of power that happened between men and women. Women’s rights have changed so much over the centuries and are continuing to change toady. Appiah then talks about conversation and how “the word ‘conversation’ not only for literal talk but also as a metaphor for engagement with the experience and the ideas of others.”  He talks about the idea that conversations are met to cross boundaries and that we should be talking about identity, religion and other conversations that will bring us closer to people. They are met to learn more and engage deeper with people.
